Flare
Flare

“Flare” is fused, kiln-formed glass. It was created by layering glass in a mosaic style. It took time, dedication and a planned approach. So does dealing with chronic pain. A flare occurs when symptoms of a chronic issue, that has been present for some time, suddenly worsen.

NeuroElasticity
NeuroElasticity

“NeuroElasticity” on display, as part of The Magical World of Glass exhibition at The Commonwheel Artists Co-op. in Manitou Springs. April 30-June 3, 2024.

The brain’s neuroplasticity is the “elastic” part of our brain that allows us to change, adapt and reorganize. After mild TBIs from car accidents, this was my visual interpretation of the brain’s neurons seeking to create new neural pathways.

This artwork was purchased during The Magical World of Glass exhibition. It has found it’s forever home.

Sorrow
Sorrow

“Sorrow” was created after my dad passed away. Processing death is hard for everyone. Grief can sneak up on you, when you least expect it. It can take on the form sadness, apathy, anger, etc. I have tears, as I write this. I love and miss you, Dad.

Surge
Surge

“Surge” is fused, kiln-formed glass. This piece represents the reactionary sensitivity that happens after brain injury. Even with a mild TBI, the emotions surge and are hard to control. It’s like walking with a full bowl of liquid that moves with every step. The smallest stumble and emotions surge. The spill is messy and no matter how careful you are, it takes time to clean it up.

Haze
Haze

“Haze”, kiln-formed glass sculpture on display at The Commonwheel, in Manitou Springs April 30-June 3, 2024.

Reigniting Passion
Reigniting Passion

This kiln-formed glass piece is called “Reigniting Passion”.

This came at a time when I was struggling with the aftereffects of whiplash from car accidents. I was managing pain, nerve damage and trying to figure out how to make art when my hands would go numb after just 30 minutes of making.

This piece has many layers and required several firings. It was a turning point in my art making. I learned to plan, prepare and create differently to manage my damaged body. It holds special significance, in that it symbolically represents success and achievement that I can still do my desired art form. It, also, is one of the first pieces that embodies my post-concussion feelings. I struggle with migraines on a regular basis. Sometimes, I feel like my brain is on fire. For me, this piece represents ALL of that.

Flare
Flare

“Flare” at The Commonwheel Artist’s Coop, in Manitou Springs. I was so pleased to see so many familiar faces at the opening on Friday, May 3, 2024. It was nice to catch up and warmed my heart. At the end of the night, I was really missing Manitou. Thanks for coming out, friends.

Grounded
Grounded

“Grounded” fused kiln-formed glass on wall mounted boxes. This is from my Ebb and Flow series.

When I think of being grounded, I desire balance and stability. When we have lots going on, or feel our focus pulled in multiple directions, we become flustered or less confident. Techniques for maintaining balance become fleeting. We try something and maybe don’t stick to it. Developing healthy habits takes time and commitment. I don’t know about you, but I’m still trying to figure out what works for me.

“Grounded” was on display at The Commonwheel in Manitou Springs, CO, as part of The Magical World of Glass exhibition.

Nature Hike
Nature Hike

“Nature Hike” is one of my favorites. I love the asymmetrical composition. The tension created by the stand and the glass is compelling. The colors projected onto the wall are eye catching. My aim was to create a piece that feels like when you walk through tall grass and can feel it tickle your leg. I love the healing that nature brings. I used to be a big camper. The trauma from car accidents make sleeping in a tent too difficult on my body. Nowadays, roughing it is sleeping in a bed that’s not my own. So, I retreat to the hiking trails when I can.

“Nature Hike” is fused, kiln-formed glass on display at The Commonwheel Artists Coop, in Manitou Springs, April 30-June 3, 2024.

Early Favorites

"These are some of my favorite works", says Laura McCracken.  These works were created from 1998-2011.  Laura has a background in drawing and painting, yet has always been attracted to different media and materials.  Early on, Laura enjoyed playing with different materials to achieve a look or feel that maybe couldn't be created with traditional drawing media.

Clayprint Monotype
Clayprint Monotype

Clayprinting is a non-traditional type of printmaking.  I was first introduced to it by Michael Cellan, in the late 90s.  This playful, experimental technique involves the layering of non-binding pigments onto a clay base.  Then, the artist hand prints onto interfacing.  It was a process that was very free and fun.  Michael Cellan, took a workshop in Santa Fe, with Mitch Lyons, who is credited with popularizing this style of printmaking.

Encaustic
Encaustic

I took an encaustic workshop around the same time I started fused glass.  It was a difficult decision as to which medium I should focus on, and be able to afford, financially.  Like the clay printing, it was a fun and playful medium.  As an elementary art educator, I tend to like every medium and material.  But, glass won my heart.

I have had the blessing of knowing Michael Cellan, since my very first year of teaching.  I have had the luck of having him as a teaching mentor, he was the high school art educator for 40 years.  I attended several of his week long classes and learned all sorts of fun techniques.  I.e.  clay printing, watercolor, art with a copy machine, and foil relief.  Michael is also one of the founding member of the co-op I am a member of, the Bridge Gallery, in Colo. Springs.

Foil Relief

I have had the blessing of knowing Michael Cellan, since my very first year of teaching.  I have had the luck of having him as a teaching mentor, he was the high school art educator for 40 years.  I attended several of his week long classes and learned all sorts of fun techniques.  I.e.  clay printing, watercolor, art with a copy machine, and foil relief.  Michael is also one of the founding member of the co-op I am a member of, the Bridge Gallery, in Colo. Springs.

I believe I learned how to do Polaroid Emulsion Transfer via a workshop at the Colorado Art Educators Conference.  It wasn't something I stuck with, but I enjoyed it for a while.

The original drawing came from a copy machine collage.  I participated in a workshop by Michael Cellan in Santa Fe.  After the original collage was created, I went back in with Sharpie and White Out.  The final collage was enlarged and painted with watercolors.

I still enjoy working with acrylics.  This was an early piece dealing with the sting of betrayal.

Sleepless Dreamstate Instillation, 2007
Sleepless Dreamstate Instillation, 2007

Laura McCracken:  "This is a portion of an instillation solo show entitled 'Sleepless Dreamstate'.  It was at The Bridge Gallery in Colorado Springs in 2007.  The show was in response to my life changing after a head injury incurred via sport.  I was mourning my previous self/life.  At the time of the head injury, I was unaware of how severe it was.  I struggled for nine months before being diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome.  For the next 30 months, I struggled with cognitive, social, and emotional issues."

Laura McCracken:  "Plaster body cast representing my former self.  I left it raw and unfinished, as that was, at the time, how I was feeling after recuperating from a head injury.  The figure is displayed on a mirror, representative of a time of reflection.

What is interesting now, looking back at this piece, was how much glass I included in this instillation.  I had yet to begin working in fused glass.  My introduction to fused glass would be a year and half after this show."

Hot Glass

Laura McCracken began hot glass during a 2012 session at Penland School of Craft.  Laura was instantly captivated!  Laura returned home and tried flame working for a few months before journeying up to Denver to take classes at C&H Glassworks in Lakewood, CO. After a year of commuting to Denver for a lessons and studio time, Laura took the plunge and moved to the Denver area to be closer to the studio.

Laura's 2014 solo show entitled "Ambiguous Balance" at The Bridge Gallery in Colorado Springs was her first show featuring fused kiln-formed glass with hot glass.
